Our Beginning Together

The Story of How We Met

His Version:
My friends and I planned to go to the mountains and have a fire, marshmallows, and four wheeling. My mission buddy said he was going to invite a girl he had just gone on a date with who happened to be Bonnie's roommate. Bonnie told my friend that her roommate had plans for the evening but Bonnie wasn't doing anything so she came along instead. There were some other people that came with Bonnie but they had to leave right away. We lit a little fire, which Bonnie to this day will describe as pitiful, and ate marshmallows. I was very impressed that Bonnie ate 10 marshmallows and seemed to just love them. In talking with Bonnie I found out she had just moved to Utah and didn't really know anyone. I thought it would be a good idea to invite her to activities with my friends. She didn't remember who I was but came along anyway. She invited a couple boys from her ward just to make sure I knew she wasn't interested in dating. I didn't really think about dating her because she's a few years older than me and I was nervous she would just want to get married. Boy was I right. After we hung out a few times she got it in her head that I was attractive. As I think about it, the cold weather probably fogged her eyes a little and made me appear to be tall, dark, handsome, and charming. As we spent more and more time together I realized that Bonnie is the most amazing girl I had ever met. This still holds true and my love for her grows each and every day.

Her Version:
It was not love at first sight for us, but our friendship grew into love and it keeps getting better every day. I was invited along to a mutual friends get together where we roasted marshmallows and did some four-wheeling. I remember Rick commenting on the number of marshmallows I ate (I think it was 12) and I teased him about the puny fire he made. A few days later I came home to a message from my roommates that Rick called. I didn’t think I knew a Rick, until he called back and reminded me who he was. We started to hang out purely as friends. I was open to meeting new people since I was new in the area myself. A couple months later my friend and I met up with Rick and his friends at the ice skating rink and that was where cupid hit me. Me and my friend had come late and were standing on the outside of the rink when I saw Rick at the other end. He saw me and skated over. All of a sudden he became cute to me. I turned to my friend and told her what I thought. From that moment on I started to see him as more than a friend and someone I wanted to get to know better. I still remember the shirt he was wearing and have kept it even though I really don’t love it. Well, things progressed. We hung out more and we enjoyed being together. He took me country dancing even though he does not love the music. I deeply respected that he loved his mission in Mongolia. To this day he still gets emotional when he shares thoughts from his time there. Also, I liked that he was not complicated emotionally, that he was very responsible with his money, and that he was working towards a college degree. It was after he came with me to visit my family for my sister’s wedding that he realized he couldn’t live without me. Not too long later we were engaged and married a few months after that. Lucky me!

We had lots of fun dating and being engaged. We went country line dancing, participated in swing dancing lessons at the University, visited Washington, went camping, went on motorcycle rides, took walks, watched movies, talked a lot, and even bought a house.

Marriage has brought even more fun (and thankfully a digital camera to capture our memories better).
